The Taiwan Weighted Index closed at 48,475.74 on Thursday, a fresh record that caps a 65 percent climb this year and leaves the benchmark a hair below the intraday peak of 48,601.53 set on 22 September. The advance has outpaced every major gauge in the region: Korea's Kospi has risen 62.5 percent, Japan's Nikkei 32 percent, and the Nasdaq roughly 16 percent over the same stretch.
The calendar tells the story
Only two months have finished in the red this year, March, down 10 percent, and July, down 6.5 percent. Every other month has added to a run that now ranks among the steepest in the index's history. The consistency is unusual for a market that has historically moved in lockstep with the semiconductor cycle's sharper turns.
Exports confirm the demand signal
August shipments hit a monthly record of $82.4 billion, driven by a 58 percent year-on-year jump in electronic components and a 42 percent rise in information and communications products. Those two categories now make up nearly 80 percent of total exports. Export orders, a leading indicator, surged 71.4 percent to $102.96 billion, crossing the $100 billion threshold for the first time. The data, reported by Focus Taiwan, suggest the rally rests on more than momentum chasing.
One stock, forty percent of the index
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company accounts for more than 40 percent of the TAIEX's market value. Its shares have gained 44 percent year-to-date, meaning the broad index's performance is effectively a levered bet on a single name. The concentration means any shift in AI capital spending, or in TSMC's own guidance, will be felt disproportionately in the benchmark.
Growth numbers catch up to the hype
Real GDP expanded 15.43 percent year-on-year in the first quarter and 12.93 percent in the second, according to Taiwan National Statistics. The government now sees full-year 2026 growth at 11.05 percent, moderating to 6.04 percent in 2027. The forecast implies the current pace is the peak, not the new baseline, a distinction the market has not always priced in previous cycles.
