The domestic summer box office has crossed $4 billion as of August 10, the second time since the pandemic the season has reached the pre-Covid benchmark, driven by Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” and Sony’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.”
The Nolan anomaly
“The Odyssey” has grossed $1.1 billion globally in four weeks, becoming Nolan’s highest-grossing film and the biggest IMAX release ever at $289 million, surpassing “Avatar’s” roughly $270 million. Variety’s Rebecca Rubin notes the film does not appear close to slowing down, meaning both records will keep rising.
China opens next
The film debuts in China this week, where IMAX screens are reportedly sold out through September. Nolan’s popularity in the market, combined with the billion-dollar headline, is expected to add further momentum to the global tally.
