Sony's Spider-Man: Brand New Day debuted to $927 million worldwide across 90,000 screens, the second-largest global opening in box office history and more than double the studio's own $425 million projection. The haul trails only Avengers: Endgame's $1.22 billion record bow and leapfrogs Avengers: Infinity War's $640.5 million start. For Sony, the film instantly becomes the studio's biggest opening ever and the highest-grossing release of 2026 to date, displacing Disney/Pixar's Toy Story 5 at $1.065 billion.
The projection miss
The $425 million forecast now looks less like a conservative estimate and more like a category error. Internally, Sony had signaled the film would pass $1 billion within days of release, a threshold it will cross by Monday based on weekend hold patterns described as "easily far ahead of No Way Home's." The prior Spider-Man installment, No Way Home, opened to $600.5 million globally, previously the third-best debut ever, now fourth. Brand New Day also set personal records for star Zendaya and director Daniel Destin Cretton.
International drive
Overseas markets delivered $572 million from 66 territories on 73,500 screens, accounting for 62 percent of the global total. All-time opening records fell in France ($26.6 million), India ($31.8 million, the sixth-biggest debut ever in a Bollywood-dominated market), Brazil ($23.8 million), Spain ($15.6 million), Peru ($8.6 million), Colombia ($6.8 million), the United Arab Emirates ($6.8 million), Saudi Arabia ($5.4 million), Chile ($5.0 million), Turkey ($4.7 million), Ecuador ($4.1 million) and Belgium ($4.0 million). Brazil, historically a DC stronghold, outperformed Endgame in like-for-like comparisons despite a weak exchange rate and a post-Covid slump for Hollywood product. The Middle East region unseated Bad Boys: Ride or Die as the opening-weekend champion.
China and the Russia gap
China led all markets with $121 million, the largest post-Covid debut for a Marvel title; No Way Home never released there. The United Kingdom followed at $49 million (third all-time), Mexico at $38.3 million (second all-time), South Korea at $25 million (Naver audience score 91, first-day occupancy record 53 percent), Australia at $21.4 million (second all-time), Germany at $20 million, Italy at $18.2 million, Argentina at $10.5 million, Japan at $10 million (notably pulling the 20-40 demographic), the Philippines at $9.3 million (third all-time) and the Netherlands at $4.7 million (third all-time). The one missing piece: Russia, which contributed $15.4 million to Endgame's opening but remains closed to MPA titles.
What to watch
The film's legs will determine whether it challenges Endgame's full-run records or merely its opening benchmark. Daily hold data so far suggests momentum well ahead of No Way Home, which finished its run at $1.92 billion globally. If Brand New Day maintains comparable multiples, a $2 billion worldwide total enters the conversation, though the absence of Russia removes a structural $15-20 million from the ceiling. For Sony, the immediate win is clearer: the studio now owns the top two Spider-Man openings and the 2026 box office crown, all from a single weekend that cost it nothing in revised expectations.
