OpenAI has been valued at $1.25 trillion in a fresh financing that brought in $11 billion, according to Bloomberg, pushing the artificial intelligence company into the ranks of the world’s most valuable enterprises just eight months after a $122 billion round priced it at $852 billion.

The round is not finished

Bloomberg reports that OpenAI is still pursuing additional commitments that could lift the total raise to $20 billion. The company had initially targeted as much as $30 billion at a valuation of $1.4 trillion, but those ambitions were scaled back after a decline in tech stocks and midterm election results that signaled a shift in public sentiment against AI firms and data center projects.

The IPO timeline remains open

Chief Executive Sam Altman has said the company is prioritizing safety over a “guns blazing” rush to the public markets. He previously stated that OpenAI would hold off on an initial public offering until it could make more confident claims about the safety of its models, though he also warned that waiting too long to go public would be “kind of bad for the world.” No specific timeline has been given.

Anthropic moves toward the exit

The financing comes as rival Anthropic filed its S-1 registration statement last week, clearing a path toward its own IPO. The parallel tracks, OpenAI raising massive private capital while Anthropic prepares for a public listing, will give markets a live comparison of how the two leading foundation model companies are valued under very different ownership structures.
