Sony and Marvel's Spider-Man: Brand New Day crossed the $2 billion global threshold in its seventeenth day of release, becoming the eighth film in history to reach the mark and the second-fastest behind Avengers: Endgame's eleven-day pace. The milestone arrives as the summer box office demonstrates unusual concentration at the very top.
The numbers behind the milestone
Domestic receipts stand at $785.8 million, the fourth-highest cumulative total ever recorded in the U.S. and Canada. International markets have contributed $1.236 billion across 67 territories for a worldwide sum of $2.022 billion. The third weekend added $188.7 million globally, with $70 million domestic, the second-best third frame on record behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens at $90.2 million.
China and the international map
China led the latest international frame with $10 million, lifting its running total to $210 million. France declined 39 percent to $9.1 million for a $63.7 million cume, while the United Kingdom fell 49 percent to $8.2 million en route to $106 million. The film has now become Sony Pictures' highest-grossing release ever in 36 markets including India, Brazil, Mexico, and Spain.
Nolan's Odyssey holds second place
Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey collected $121.4 million worldwide in its fifth weekend, pushing its global tally to $1.29 billion. The film opened in China to $36.6 million including previews, with Imax accounting for roughly 80 percent of ticket sales from 40 percent of showtimes. The Chinese start tracked alongside Oppenheimer and more than doubled The Dark Knight Rises. Imax globally has generated $346.4 million to date, making The Odyssey the format's highest-grossing title ever.
A quieter start for The End of Oak Street
Warner Bros. and Bad Robot's The End of Oak Street debuted to $47 million worldwide against a production budget of $80 million to $92 million before marketing. The $21 million domestic opening sits above Anne Hathaway's recent dramatic releases but below what a star-driven creature feature typically requires to justify its cost structure.
