Elon Musk escalated his public campaign against Mukesh Ambani days before Reliance Industries launches India's largest-ever initial public offering, framing the clash as a battle over satellite broadband pricing in the world's cheapest data market.

The IPO timeline

Jio Platforms, the digital services arm that houses the telecom business, has set a price band of ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per share and is targeting a $106 billion valuation. The offering could debut any day. Meanwhile Jio's own satellite venture, like SpaceX's Starlink, is still waiting for final security clearance to operate in India. Musk has not disclosed a valuation, pricing structure or launch timeline for Starlink's Indian entry.

The pricing challenge

Mobile data in India averages roughly eight cents per gigabyte, among the lowest rates globally. Musk acknowledged the constraint in a post on X, stating that Starlink would have to make its service affordable or find no buyers. He argued that competition would benefit Indian consumers by expanding choice. The source did not specify what price point Musk considers viable.

The Kenya precedent

Analysts point to Kenya, where Starlink entered at aggressive rates and disrupted established telecom operators. Sandeep Pandey of Basav Capital noted that Jio holds the advantage of an existing distribution network and deep local market knowledge, while Starlink brings the playbook of a new entrant willing to undercut incumbents. Mahesh Ojha of KC Securities characterized the exchange as a commercial race rather than a political one, noting that both executives have a history of dominating the markets they enter.

What comes next

SpaceX has signaled plans to move beyond wholesale broadband and become a mobile carrier itself, beginning in the United States. Whether that model transfers to India depends on regulatory approvals, spectrum access and whether Starlink can match the economics that made Jio dominant. The IPO will test investor appetite for a telecom giant already facing a well-capitalized rival that has yet to show its hand.
