Elon Musk has authorized his America PAC to deploy up to $120 million on the 2026 midterms, a sum that would make him one of the cycle’s largest Republican financiers just months after he told Bloomberg he would do “a lot less in the future” and confessed to The Economist that he “got a little too involved in politics.” The New York Times reported the budget range Thursday, citing two unnamed sources familiar with the plans.
The budget and the battlegrounds
The PAC intends to spend between $100 million and $120 million across at least eight Senate races and several House contests, with initial targets in Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Michigan and Ohio and possible involvement in North Carolina, Georgia and Texas. Axios reported Wednesday that the operation will focus on mobilizing Republican voters who typically sit out non-presidential years, framing it as a historic get-out-the-vote effort. Federal Election Commission filings show America PAC has already directed $2.3 million to Lex Politica, an Austin political-law firm co-founded by a former PAC lawyer, between February 2025 and March 2026.
The contradiction is the story
Musk spent more than $260 million electing Donald Trump in 2024, becoming the largest political donor in history. Last year he denounced the GOP, floated a third party and called for Trump’s impeachment in posts he has since deleted. His re-entry at this scale suggests the break was performative or short-lived. The money also arrives as the PAC faces scrutiny for paying $1 million each to two Wisconsin voters in April 2025 as part of a petition giveaway that state officials have said may violate election-bribery laws.
The GOP’s fragile arithmetic
Republicans are defending slim majorities in both chambers. A CNN poll released Wednesday showed Democrats leading the generic congressional ballot by eight points and holding a 20-point advantage among voters who say they are extremely motivated to turn out. Trump’s approval has fallen to record lows in several recent surveys, dragged down by economic discontent and Republican souring on the Iran war. Musk’s cash is effectively a hedge against the top of the ticket.
What the money actually buys
The PAC’s filings reveal a machine built on voter outreach, legal services and advertising, not persuasion. In a midterm where turnout decides everything, $120 million buys a ground game that the Republican National Committee has struggled to fund. Whether it buys influence with a Trump administration that Musk has both attacked and accompanied to China is a separate question. The checks are written. The strategy is turnout. The irony is explicit.
