A Bermuda-licensed life insurer that runs its entire balance sheet in Bitcoin has closed a $37.5 million follow-on round from existing backers, led by Bain Capital Crypto. The raise pushes Meanwhile's total capital past $180 million and comes after what the company describes as a record year for its single-premium product targeting high-net-worth families outside the United States.
License and custody structure
The Bermuda Monetary Authority granted Meanwhile its license in July 2024 after two years in the regulator's sandbox, making it the first life insurer authorized to hold reserves, publish audited financials, and settle claims entirely in Bitcoin. Policyholder coins sit with regulated institutional custodians, not on the company's own keys. Sam Altman, chief executive of OpenAI, is among the individual backers; the investor roster also includes Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital.
Product mechanics and early traction
The new BTC Life 1-Pay policy, launched in early 2026, requires a single Bitcoin payment and promises a guaranteed death benefit denominated in Bitcoin for life. Cash value accumulates in Bitcoin, and policyholders may borrow up to 90 percent of that value after the first year with no fixed repayment schedule and no margin calls. A prior 10-payment version was designed for U.S. taxpayers. Since the single-premium launch, Meanwhile has onboarded 15 brokers across Singapore, Hong Kong, the UAE, and Switzerland, and says net long-term underwriting income has already exceeded the full-year 2025 total.
The pitch and the gap
"Wealthy families around the world already hold Bitcoin. What they haven't had is a regulated way to pass it on," co-founder and chief executive Zac Townsend said. The product fills a custody-and-succession gap for holders who want estate planning without liquidating, but the model remains untested in a prolonged bear market. Reserves and claims are marked to a volatile asset, and the company has not disclosed stress-test scenarios or the exact composition of its custodial arrangements beyond naming the custodian tier.
Broader context
The raise mirrors a quiet shift among incumbent insurers. Delaware Life partnered with BlackRock last year to embed Bitcoin exposure in a fixed indexed annuity, signaling that traditional carriers are willing to pair the asset with long-duration liabilities. Meanwhile's structure goes further by denominating the entire contract in Bitcoin, removing fiat conversion at issuance and at claim. Whether regulators in other jurisdictions will recognize the Bermuda license for cross-border sales remains an open question.
