MacKenzie Scott has steered $461 million into California public education since 2021, spreading the money across 16 institutions with no restrictions on how it is spent. The gifts, tracked by EdSource, average roughly $28.8 million each and arrive as many campuses contend with structural budget gaps.
The largest recipients
California State University, Northridge leads the tally at $103 million, delivered in two tranches: $40 million in 2021 and $63 million in 2025. The campus was carrying a $16.3 million deficit when the second gift landed, making the unrestricted nature of the funds immediately material. UC Merced follows with $58 million total, split between a $20 million gift in 2021 and a $38 million gift in 2025. California State University, East Bay received a single $50 million donation that the school described as transformational.
How the money moves
Scott's organization, Yield Giving, does not dictate spending plans. Each institution designs its own allocation. CSUN's foundation board chair, Robert Taylor, said the 2025 gift reflected confidence in the university's mission and its record with students, about 70 percent of CSUN's 36,000 enrollees are first-generation college students and 60 percent come from historically underrepresented groups. UC Merced directed its funds toward student success programs, faculty research, and capital projects. Cal State East Bay earmarked its gift for career outcomes, paid internship expansion, and a permanent endowment. Fresno Unified School District received $20 million in 2022, part of the roughly 10 percent of Scott's California education giving that reached K-12 districts and community colleges.
The philosophy in her own words
In a 2024 essay on the Yield Giving blog, Scott wrote that she targets "mission-aligned ventures" and "generally undercapitalized groups like women and people of color." She argued the capital works twice: first by advancing economic mobility through diverse perspectives, then again in the hands of nonprofit teams executing their own models of change. Her 2025 giving year totaled $7 billion, bringing her cumulative donations over the past few years above $26 billion.
