Goldman Sachs initiated coverage on 14 Indian lenders Thursday, handing Buy ratings to the four largest private banks while slapping Sell calls on two mid-sized names and two state-owned giants. The brokerage frames the sector at an inflection point where earnings acceleration, franchise strength and valuation gaps separate the winners from the laggards.

The big four get the nod

ICICI Bank leads the preferred list with a Rs 1,935 target implying 37 percent upside from current levels. Kotak Mahindra Bank follows at Rs 509 for 31 percent. HDFC Bank and Axis Bank both carry Buy ratings but with more modest 19 percent upside targets of Rs 861 and Rs 1,477 respectively. The dispersion in implied returns across the large private cohort is the actual story, the market has already priced HDFC and Axis for perfection while ICICI and Kotak still trade at a discount to their franchise value.

Mid-sized bets and explicit avoids

Federal Bank and AU Small Finance Bank round out the Buy slate with targets of Rs 425 and Rs 1,270 offering 19 and 18 percent upside. On the other side of the ledger, RBL Bank carries a Rs 285 target signaling 26 percent downside while Yes Bank's Rs 22 target leaves only 4 percent downside, a Sell rating that reads more like a polite exit sign than a conviction short.

Public sector reality check

State Bank of India earns a Neutral rating with an Rs 1,170 target for 11 percent upside. Bank of Baroda and Punjab National Bank join the Sell list at Rs 245 and Rs 103 implying zero and 12 percent downside respectively. The PSU split confirms what the market already knows: SBI is a different franchise, the others are policy instruments masquerading as commercial banks.

What the framework actually captures

Goldman's three-pillar framework, earnings acceleration, franchise strength, valuations, is standard equity research grammar. The utility lies in the application: private banks screen well on the first two pillars while PSU names fail the franchise test and mid-sized names like RBL fail the earnings test. The preferred quartet of ICICI, Kotak, AU Small Finance and Federal Bank simply passes all three screens simultaneously.
